Background and Objectives
Lumbar degenerative disease is considered as one of the most important causes of low back pain. Epidemiological and clinical studies, especially in recent years, have shown direct relationship between lipid profiles, risk factors of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, and lumbar disc degeneration. Due to the lack of existing studies and the inconsistency of some of their results, the current study was conducted with the aim of examining lipid profile and some factors in lumbar disc degeneration surgery candidate patients.

Methods and Materials/Patients
The study was carried out on 130 bedridden adult patients (aged 20-77 years), candidate for lumbar disc degenerative diseases surgery at the Poursina teaching hospital in Rasht. In addition to patients' lipid profile, weight, BMI, smoking, physical activity, and the history of some comorbid diseases with priority of lipid profile, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases were investigated as cardiovascular risk factors. For this purpose, after obtaining the written consent, the patients' medical record, face-to-face questionnaire, fasting blood tests' results, scale and tape measure and rapid assessment physical activity (RAPA) standard questionnaire  were used. The data were analyzed using SPSS 16, and Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used to examine the relationship between the qualitative and ranking variables with a significance level of P≤0.05.


60.8% of the subjects had comorbid diseases, mostly hyperlipidemia (32.7% of cases) and hypertension (30.8% of cases). 87.7% of these people had dyslipidemia; the levels of total cholesterol, LDL, and triglyceride were more than normal in 46.2, 68.5 and 46.2% of subjects, respectively, and the level of HDL was less than normal in 44.6% of patients. The mean LDL and triglyceride levels were higher than normal, and the mean total cholesterol was reported at border line. 74.6% and 84.6% of the patients had BMI and abdominal circumference higher than the normal range. Physical activity in 88.5% of subjects was below the desired level, and 79.2% of the patients did not report a history of smoking. Inferential findings indicated a significant relationship between dyslipidemia and various types of lumbar disc degenerative diseases (P <0.05).


The study showed dyslipidemia, and some other risk factors for cardiovascular diseases including obesity and inactivity in patients with lumbar disc degenerative diseases. However, more research is needed on atherosclerosis factors and types of blood lipids.
